How can we create a positive experience for Social Media users
In the early days when the world recognized social media, its tendency to behave was good. At that time, a platform was created in this media for the people who did not have a voice on social media, that is, for a section of the people who were not exposed to the main traditional media. They built a platform on this to express their views freely. In that sense, freedom of expression had a certain space and platform in the context of social media. Accordingly, it can be said that a very positive trend was seen in the early days.
It created a new direction of democracy in the formation of the ideological ideas of the voiceless. Its culmination began in Tunisia and spread to Syria. 'The political wave of the Arab Spring came through. The burning of a fruit vendor sparked a wave of democratic tendencies and people rallied around it on social media.
Here the youth of the millennium made a great contribution to democracy. These became mediators, not partners. This new tool of democracy was taken into their hands. Social media became a tool to unite against social injustices by unleashing ideologies. Although the group was ideologically united there, they did not have the right mature political leadership or proper guidance; This presented only their views.
These people became social media operators without any correct political vision and limited to ideological struggles. As a result, the statements of these people went astray. In all the countries where the Arab Spring has dawned, we see a lot of chaos.
The Arab Spring did not turn into a forward-looking political movement. As a result, with the emergence of political ideology in the Arab Spring, large international cats became active. Social media is also at the forefront and pioneer in this context.
The Arab Spring, which began as a social media initiative, was stalled due to the lack of cat hands and proper political leadership. Syria became a fragmented country. This was the big turning point on social media. With the Arab Spring, political analysts noted that it gave a new face to democracy. The reason for this is the space for the voiceless to raise their voices. Another achievement of freedom of expression is that everyone becomes a provider of content, information and ideology to society. Those who behaved on all social media sites including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp all became informants to the society. Unknown social groups, institutions of governance, institutions that enforce democracy, those who point out the shortcomings and point out the wrongs have emerged. Both good and bad began to communicate.
In the context of normal communication, people are communicated to a society. Work is done in accordance with the values within a certain framework. But these informants have no knowledge of the ethical media ethics of a journalist who has developed a discipline in a media institution. There is not much teaching on the subject of communication in our educational pattern. Media literacy is greatly reduced in education. In Third World countries, there is no study to make communication in developing countries ethical with any discipline. Communicators do not have a deep understanding of the consequences of reading what thousands of people write on this social media.
But in general conventional media, it is ethically done with a certain process of editing and editing within an editorial board. Therefore, the word 'journalist' cannot be used by the writers on these social media. Journalism is the work of a group of five or six people. This is because of the possibility that the fault of one person may be corrected by another. According to that code of ethics, the process of journalism takes place in the hands of a number of editors. I don't think one person can be a journalist. This process does not exist in this social media. Citizen media should be questioned. Mediaization is the process of a group; An effort. This raises the question of whether this knowledge discipline editors have restraint on social media. Are ethical systems that should be respected and respected as a society. Protects the rights of different communities. These are media ethics issues. It is a question of whether the values of a society have core value systems in the use of social media. This use of social media has become a commodity today. Facebook WhatsApp is under an American company. This American company receives some money for all the reports we use. Today, Facebook is one of the highest earning companies in the world. Over the past few years, the issue of social media has become a place where people change their behavior patterns. During elections, people's attitudes and beliefs were influenced to a point where they could change. In the 2015 American election, Eastern European hackers subtly invaded American voters and hacked into their Facebook accounts to carry out certain election campaigns. During the election seasons in our country, political figures spend money on their interests and create fake accounts. When it comes to the last election, there was more focus on social media than the mainstream media. The media industry makes a good income during election time. But according to the trend, there is a bigger response to an ad that is advertised through Facebook than a newspaper. This has a direct impact on the economy of the media industry and the attitudes of the people. In many Asian countries this is flowing like a wave.
The other issue is misrepresentation. The creation of false information through awareness, the further development and dissemination of factual information, all these are the socialization of false information. The problem here is that misinformation becomes a business. Their spread is very fast. Some countries have digital armies to spread false information. Their job is to create informational responses. This leads to conflicts in society over political interests. This is an adverse outcome. This social media is used to spread hatred to disturb the peace of the society even with a minor incident.
Here even the peace of the country can be affected. Facebook alone is used by more than a third of the world's population, or 2.6 billion. There, one in three people has an account. Fake accounts increase during the election season. The number of accounts increases and through it slanders, insults, slanders and false propaganda are spread. And the new trend is the WhatsApp group. While it is possible to do some level of monitoring and pilot monitoring for any misconduct on Facebook, it is not an easy task. Satisfactory surveillance methods are set up, but these WhatsApp groups are difficult to monitor. Investigative teams have to put in a lot of effort here. So these WhatsApp groups have become a big social media issue.
Some people believe that WhatsApp surveillance, pilot monitoring is not possible. But it is a myth. Israel was the first country to tap the WhatsApp social media network pilot monitoring. Many countries today have this technology. With the advent of technologies, more and more social media is becoming more and more pilot supervised. That is why there is a problem with the word 'social media regulation'. The social media I mentioned above can do some surveillance.
Surveillance should be pilot supervision in order to regulate. It's a question of how to create rules for WhatsApp groups. It's a problem. It is a question of how to explore and monitor highly confidential secure communication methods.
This goes a long way in regulating social media. The world's most successful social media regulatory medium has not yet been developed. It is difficult to do so. The entire social media network lacks the technology to conduct pilot monitoring and is difficult to legislate. This is a crisis not only in Sri Lanka but in the world as well. Some countries are looking for solutions to some extent, and the question is how democratic those solutions are.
Laws cannot be made against the very essence of democracy. The laws introduced by some countries do not belong to the core systems of democracy. Companies like Facebook also face the dilemma of how freedom of expression operates in the face of misinformation and slander while preserving the basic democratic features. Companies such as YouTube and Facebook have set a certain value system for the community they use. If they overdo it and spread the word, some action will be taken. It is not one hundred percent successful. Information transmitted from native languages to certain countries cannot be regulated. The big problem is that cultural readings in different countries cannot be compared with an English translation. These reports are released in a large number of languages around the world.
How many large linguistic, ethnic, religious, religious, cultural, caste social groups are there? The question is whether one regulation can be brought in for them. So what is the best form of regulation? Education and Self Discipline.
Social media regulation can be self-generated. How is that? Wrong and right information can all be separated from the discipline given to us by religion. Behavior that does not persecute others in particular has been preached by any theologian. In the current context, we need to explain to this social phenomenon that educating people is more important than technology in order to stop the distribution of wrong and accurate information. It is important to identify misinformation. No matter how many laws there are, that law alone makes it difficult to tame someone.
In order to develop a system of self-regulation in the regulation of social media, the individual must be made aware of the methods of use. It should be explained how to use it properly and how it is regulated. Misinformation should also be aware of how defamatory information is spread. It is the best regulation if lying takes place in the context of a country's society by taking the four principles of cooked speech, profanity and traditionalism.
It is difficult to follow a single methodology to regulate all new technological tools. Therefore, the best regulation is the regulation of the individual, and in order to strengthen the awareness of the individual, good religious discipline must be established. If man is empowered by mastering these basic values, they will have a strong belief in the rules of law and technology and realize that the distance they can follow is limited. Accordingly, the discipline that comes from religious discipline is very important.
