1973 - In 1973, Gates enters Harvard as a pre-law major and soon shifts focus. He quickly runs through university’s most rigorous mathematics and graduate level computer science courses

1970

1974 - Steve Jobs joins Atari, and goes to India looking for enlightenment.

1975 - Gate calls MITS, and offers to create software for the MITS Altair. MITS eventually buys his language for $3000 plus royalties. He took an absence off of school to worth on his future company called Micro-Soft.1976 - In 1976, Paul Allen and Bill Gates create the trademark for “Microsoft”.

1977 - Gates takes a second leave of absence from Harvard and sets up Microsoft in Albuquerque, N.M., where MITS is headquartered.

1975

1976 - Steve Jobs founds Apple while Steve Wozniak creates the Apple One.

1977 - One year later, Steve Wozniak creates the Apple 2 with an original retail price of $1298. This computer came with 4kb of RAM.

 

1981 - Microsoft incorporates and buys rights to the operating system “DOS” ( Disk Operating System) ( $50000) from Seattle Computer Products. They modified the system and renamed it MS-DOS, later on the company licenses it to IBM for the new personal computer.

1983 - Allen leaves Microsoft after developing Hodgkin’s disease. Microsoft announces Windows as an extension of its MS-DOS operating system.

1980

1984 - Steve Jobs then creates the Macintosh. It was the first computer to feature a mouse and graphic user interface.

1986 - Microsoft relocates their headquarters to Redmond, Washington. Shortly after the company goes public.

1987 - At age 31, Bill Gates becomes the youngest billionaire ever. He meets his future wife his future wife at a Microsoft expo in New York.

1989- Bill Gates finds Corbis, an archive of art and photography.

1985

1985 - In 1985, Steve Jobs was fired from Apple because he no longer owned a majority share of the company. They replaced him with John Sculley. Later that year, Steve founded NeXT Corporation. Steve Jobs alsoreceived the National Technology Medal from the US President.

1986 - Steve Jobs bought Pixar, he is also on the Disney board of directors.

1990 - The Federal Trade Commission beings an investigation into possible collusion between IBM and Microsoft, who collaborated to market their operating systems. With IBM’s OS/2 capturing the high-end of the market and Microsoft’s Windows covering the low-end of the market.

1994 - Gates weds Melinda French, and they have three children together.

1990 -  Steve Jobs marries Laurene Powell.

1991: Apple, IBM and Motorola form an alliance.

1993: The first PowerPC (601) processor is released by Motorola running at 50 MHz, 66 MHz and 80 MHz.

1995 - In July, at age 39, with a fortune of 12.9 billion, Gates becomes the richest man. Later that summer, Microsoft introduces Internet Explorer to the world, as a part of Windows 95.

1999 -  Gate publishes another best-selling book, Business @ the Speed of Thought, about the interconnectedness of business and technology.

1995

1995: Disney releases Pixar’s first movie, Toy Story.

1996: System is 7.5.5 released.

 1996: Apple Computer Inc. takes over NeXT Computer, Inc. For $430 million.

2000 - Bill Gates steps down as CEO of Microsoft. Bill Gates former Harvard dorm-mate and right-hand man Steve Ballmer takes over the helm, while Gates becomes the chief software architect.

2000

2000: Mac OSX is announced at the MacWorldExpo in San Francisco.

2004: Apple announces that over 100 millions songs were downloaded from the iTunes Store. 

2005 - Queen Elizabeth || bestows an honorary knighthood on Gates for his contributions to the United Kingdom.

2006 - Gates announces that his role as an executive at Microsoft will be phased out over the following two years. His intention, he says, is to spend more time working with The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Shortly after the announcement, Warren Buffet donated $31 billion, most of his money, to the foundation.

2007 - Gates graduates from Harvard; the university awards him with an honorary degree.

2008 -  Though Gate’s fortune still continues to grow, he loses his spot as the richest man on earth. He is then surpassed by Warren Buffet and Mexican telecom giant Carlos Slim Helu. Gates retires from day-to-day duties at Microsoft on June 27.

2005

2005: There is an Apple-Intel transition.

2006: Disney buys Pixar for $7.4 billion.

2007: Apple releases its first smartphone, the iPhone 

Bill and Melina announce that they are  donating 10 billion over the next decade to research new vaccines and bring them to the worlds poorest countries.

2010

2010: Apple sells 15 million copiesof its new gadget, the iPad. 

2011 - Bill Gates and Melinda Gates have spent millions of dollars to improve American public education, but how much good have they done? American public schools have flat-lined for years. Yet, the Bill Gates Foundation just gave $7.6 million to Education Pioneers.

2011-

2011: Job leaves Apple with no set duration.

2011: Jobs resigns as CEO. Cook takes the CEO title, and Apple names Jobs Chairman.

2011: On October 5th Jobs dies at age 56. Apple announces his death without a specific cause.
